I did some reading and apparently bees love thistles. And it takes 2 years for them to flower.

It's almost berry season

 And they are growing like crazy around the yard. Too bad the wild ones have so many seeds.

I've never tried them

 but apparently these are a delicacy this time of year in Louisiana, though they grow all year long.

This time of year people brave the spines, peel them and cook them similar to asparagus.

This photo ended up being closer than I thought...

Hard to see the spines on the leaves, but the plant is pretty, if sort of dangerous, so to speak.

 This cat adopted us just over a year ago.
