Retired, housewife, mother of three.
Picking up the pieces after God decided the 145 year old farmhouse was no longer the house for us.
Praise God for His mercy and love!
I used to see some of those in older homes, when I was a building inspector in the late '80s thru the mid-'90s. The wires were cloth-wrapped, but the cloth eventually rotted away and left bare wiring exposed. It was being replaced fairly quickly, then.
When it was designed, it was 'newfangled'... I remember when CDs replaced cassettes tapes. Now both are obsolete. Hang on to the insulators. You could reuse them for a cobbled up temporary circuit or a custom designed circuit. Maybe a high current/voltage circuit when the right wire isn't available.
I believe it is called “knob and spool” . Our house has a lot of it.
ReplyDeleteThe old farmhouse did also, Doc. And it still worked amazingly well.

ReplyDeletePerhaps that is why it was time for the house to go?
DeleteI've seen those as well. I wouldn't want to have a house wired in that way. It's a recipe for disaster.
ReplyDeleteHubby put a lot of newer wiring in the house. The whole kitchen was rewired. Living room, bedrooms.
DeleteHe learned a lot from his dad.
I had seen these as well in older homes. Frightening, now that I understand electricity.
ReplyDeleteHubby had been in the process of putting new wiring in the house. I think the only thing left on this wiring was the overhead lights.

Hadn't thought of that. There are definitely a few we could salvage.
DeleteThanks for the suggestion.
