No fish. Lots of smoke. No rain, but we did get spritz yesterday.
Another farm picture from our trip in May.
Hubby said he thinks this is some sort of holly. If the berries turn red and there are any there when we go back to mow some more, most likely in August, then we'll know for sure. :)
This, as near as I have been able to research, is something called Peppervine. I thought maybe poison ivy, but I knew it didn't look quite right. Apparently it is often confused with poison ivy (oak, etc.); but the difference is in the paired, or opposite leaves.
It's apparently a native of Texas and related to grapes, though it is a nuisance plant like poison ivy.
Other common names are Buckvine and Cow Itch...
Ah well. Happy Saturday to you all! :)
95% sure the first photo is a holly. The second photo does look poisonous.
ReplyDeleteI am doing what you are doing...trying to identify certain plants on our land. Not always so easy. Your pictures are always so beautiful. I am trying to put a notebook together that is a condensed "reference" for important issues related to our land with its geography, insects, snakes, plants, etc., and it has been a fun, challenging task. This is another good reason to have our blogs...helps us to document these things and to get the opinions and advice of others. Always nice to have on record for reference.
ReplyDeleteGrouchy, thanks! The second one I won't take any chances with. Pepper vine or poison ivy, I'll be wearing gloves and a long sleeve shirt when we start trimming it down.
ReplyDeleteLana, the camera does take some nice pictures, but it's annoying sometimes. I can't take water pictures or sky pictures because it won't focus. Annoying. Whatever happened to a camera taking a picture when you click the button, haha.
Since Texas and Louisiana are neighbors, I look forward to seeing any pictures you post. :)
Seems that everything makes me break out and itch, whether it's poisonous or not. Be careful! :)
ReplyDeleteI will, Nancy. Not taking any chances. It's going to go!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great 4th!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Melodie. I hope you all do, too. :)
ReplyDeletehm i don't know the berries and i have NO idea how poison ivy (oak) looks like, i just know my hubby is pretty alergic to it! if he just sees it he will get a rash!
ReplyDeleteHappy 4th!!!
Leontien
Leontien, I grew up with the little phrase "leaves of three, let it be". Poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac all have one thing in common, their leaves are in clusters of 3. Unfortunately the farm is crazy with it because it has either been un-cared for since basically 1981; or empty.
ReplyDeleteSo if you have any 'leaves of three', wear gloves and long sleeves and do it in. :)
You'll have to post some pictures of the berries when they change color. I wanted to let you know that my blog has moved to www.crystalcattle.com
ReplyDeleteCrystal, I'm going to try to remember to do that!
ReplyDeleteI've already added your new blog to my feed. I better check to be sure Blogger hasn't messed it up. Thanks for reminding me. :)
Ahhhhh, be careful just in case it is poisonous!! I can barely walk outside to even look at anything...it's too hot! Haha!
