Been hard to post lately. Can't seem to concentrate on blogger and it seems blogger doesn't want to work right anyway.
As you know, our trip to the farm didn't go at all like we might have expected.
We didn't get there until about 1030 at night. I do not like night arrivals.
Even with the dark though, it wasn't hard to see that everything had grown like crazy. July and August are usually the hottest months anyway, and as those of you who live in the South know, this year has been exceptionally so.
I did take a few pictures in the dark.
Notice we have no driveway visible upon arrival.

This is a shot towards the trailer. The light is the security light that the electric company maintains. I think it costs around $8 a month. A fair enough price to not be totally in the dark.

The Johnson grass had gone crazy.

This is our Chevy 2500 pickup, almost engulfed by Johnson grass.

Yes, it was taller than our truck. Annoying and a bit depressing. Hubby said to not let it get to me, but ugh.
I'm guessing there is a backyard here somewhere. It's just crazy that this is barely 3 months' growth.

Here you can see the actual grass is not as tall as the Johnson grass.

That's the burn pile. We didn't actually burn last time because it was so dry. The Johnson grass seems to love it. :/
Hope you can see the pictures okay. I shrunk them all down because I don't have the option to shrink in the blog any more. I decided to just use Webshots for now, since that is where I keep all my online photos right now anyway.
If you can't see the pictures very well, just click on the album link for August 2011, and it will take you to my album where you can see the pictures.
That's all for now. Back to reading up on you all. :-)
Blogger has new features. Performances of programs always act a fool when the writers are upgrading. I like the larger 'new post' window, though. Makes it a lot easier for me to read while I'm composing.
ReplyDeletePut ya a couple goats or any grass eating animal on the J grass. ;)
Wow! I have grass envy! My goats would love to come eat that all up for you, they haven't seen grass since...hmm...I can't even remember!
ReplyDeleteMike, Melodie, I would love to use goats, but Johnson grass is poisonous when stressed. I read of one lady who lost her whole herd of goats to it.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if the same would be true of other grass eating animals. I was hoping for a couple of goats just to get rid of the poison ivy, but right now, that's just not possible. :(
Since I'm not sure what Johnson grass considers 'stress', I just want to eradicate it all before we have animals.
I hate it when blogger updates us for our own good and then nothing works...gah!
ReplyDeleteI would have been so disappointed to see all that grass so high. Will it have to be cut or will it die back on it's own?
there's always something to do!
ReplyDeletex
Jojo, it does die back. It wasn't there in February. I just wish it wouldn't grow back again.
ReplyDeleteJohn, haha. True! I just wish we could spend a little more time on something besides mowing!
sweetie have you tried to go to google chrome thingy? I had a lot of trouble with blogger and pictures and stuff but since i installed google chrome, everything is working like a charm... maybe something to look into??
ReplyDeleteI hope you weekend will go well!
Leontien
Leontien, I love Chrome. :)
ReplyDeleteNo, it's google. And my camera. Well, hubby's camera that I use, haha.
Thank you. Hope you have a great weekend!
We've been getting rain showers almost every week, and with the heat -- the grass is growing like gangbusters. I can hardly keep up with it and I'm here all the time.
ReplyDeleteHope you all have brush hog! :)
Nancy, we do indeed and it is a bit of a time saver. :)
ReplyDeleteLinda, Oh MAN!!! I know you and your husband have got to feel as if it is a never-ending cycle! I'm dreading our first visit back to the land since the drought has been rampant. There have been well over 50 acres of land that we saw had burned and it was on the back road next to our property, I'm wondering if our land was affected. It's almost driving me crazy to not go out there, but a couple of years ago Deputy Dave had a terrible episode of battling heat stroke and we finally decided that it's just not worth it to go during the high heat...not until we get something with air-conditioning to offset the heat. Anyway, your photo of the truck with the grass alongside it is crazy! I bet you were a bit nervous about stepping out into such high grass! We have so many cottonmouth snakes that I'd be super leery. Hope you are trying to catch up with rest from all the stress you've had the last few weeks...but at least your life sure is interesting! :-)
ReplyDeleteLana, I never actually thought about snakes. Oops. I guess I just hope that the truck scares them off when we drive in. :-)
ReplyDeleteLol. True. It is interesting. :-)
