Slow day. Then a flea market tomorrow and home.

He's listening to mike church. They played some of a mayor's conference. One of the mayors mentioned the *greatest generation* and how programs can't be cut because we can't let them down.
But the greatest generation would have done anything before taking a handout and being beholden to the government.

Busy busy

Sorry I haven't been keeping up very well. Not been online a lot. Just wanted to say I'm still here. Pump house installation went well.
Will have pictures later.
I did get into something while clearing brush, apparently. Everything is dormant, so I don't know what or where, but my guess is I trimmed poison ivy without knowing it.
I took this picture with my phone:

That's the largest rash on my right arm. I've got small spots on my left arm, and managed to get some on my right cheek too, so I've been using a poison ivy spray, and cortisone cream since I got up today.

Murphy's Law

Ordered a couple of Filbert/Hazelnut trees for the farm.
Ordered them the beginning of January.
I thought about having them shipped to the farm, but had no idea when we'd be there for sure, at the time I ordered them.
So today I got the shipping confirmation email.
They'll be here tomorrow afternoon.

I've given one of my boys instructions on how to check on them, hopefully, once they arrive. We'll only be gone a week. Hopefully they can survive until I get back.

It's always something, right? ;)
Hubby will hopefully be home in the next couple hours and we can try to get this show on the road!

No surprise

Hubby has decided to leave after work tomorrow, rather than work half a day on Friday. He always gets anxious when we're going to the farm. ;-)
So, I'll try to keep up with you all, but may not post 'till I get back. Hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

So I tripped today

Just a slight imperfection in the concrete and down I went. Fortunately it was cold out, so I was wearing one of my husband's insulated shirts for a jacket. It goes down almost to my knees so I didn't rip anything. But I did skin my knee and scrape my hand.
A nice young Marine asked if I was okay and helped me up.
"Just hurt my pride," I replied. Which was true. I hate when I trip over something, let alone nothing. Or next to nothing. It really wasn't much of a difference in the two pieces of concrete that did it.
Oh well. I'm achy now, but I took something for pain.

So, I wanted to share a few pictures with you.

Hubby made a modification to the pump house. A travel modification, because it sits up so high. We're hoping, like the big trucks, that this modification will lower the wind resistance of the trailer.

He said he'll have to change the ball he usually tows with so that it will have clearance over the pickup, but hopefully it will work.

And my bucket experiment is still ongoing.

They have mostly survived the winter. And they're still mostly green. I covered them with a two clear recycle bags during the really cold windy weather. And moved them out beside the shed. They get morning sun there. And some afternoon sun, too. As clueless as I was, I guess I didn't do too bad. Though next time I think only one plant per bucket might be better. Broccoli and Brussels sprouts. I had also planted some peas for nitrogen for the B plants, but most of the peas did not like the winter temps.
A couple survived though.

For some reason, this bucket filled with water when it rained, after I took the bags off. They all have the same hole in the bottom, but this one held water. Only one plant survives. I found some fence tool (so hubby told me) and used it to put a few more holes in the bucket. And cracked the side. But at least it won't drown the...
I think it's a B sprout, but I could be wrong.

And the garlic I planted last fall survived. I thought the cold had killed them. I planted 2 store cloves that had sprouted in the fridge. Oops. :)
They've sprouted in the last bucket, which also holds a B sprout plant. :)

If you click on the picture with the single big leaf, you and see to each side of it, what looks like a stem of grass. That should be the garlic. :)

When we get back from the farm, I'm going to make a small raised bed frame from the leftover pieces from the pump house. Looking forward to trying my brown thumb with that.
We'll see how these fare while we're gone. Sadly, our boys can't be counted on to watch over them. The last time I tried that, I came home to another flooded bucket that smelled like swamp muck...

Right now it's looking like weather at the farm should be partly cloudy and mid 70s, at least through Monday. Here's hoping it continues and we can get a bit done.
I will be taking the camera. It's on my 'to go' list, so hopefully there will be a few pictures, too.

Not growths

I looked out at one of our pecan trees a bit ago and did a double take. There were lumps on it, haha.
When I looked closer, I realized a group of mourning doves were huddled on the bare branches.
Sorry for the quality of the picture. I figured if I went out on the porch, they'd fly away.

I think they are ready for spring, too. Happy Thursday!

Another short farm post.

I just realized that I don't think I posted about the back of the farm house.
I know, that's a funny thing to post about, but I don't do it a lot. So, since I haven't posted a lot and I thought about it today, I figure that is what I'll post about.

Here are a few pictures from October 2009.

Where all that green is in the corner used to be a banana tree, back in 94. Doesn't look too bad though, right?
Here it is in May of 2010.

Yup, there's a door behind that green stuff. Sometimes it's annoying how fast stuff grows there.
I can only hope the stuff we want to grow there grows as well. ;-)
You'll remember I mentioned we were glad we had thought ahead and gotten the new bush hog. That's part of the reason. It's so hard to keep up with everything.

When we got there in October, you'll remember this what we saw.

We couldn't even get into the back yard, much less see the back of the house.

But here is the back of the house when we left in November. I'm hopeful that it will look something like this the end of the month on our next trip. Especially since it's been so unusually cold.

Hopefully we made a good dent this time. I could have gotten a ladder to get those upper vines, since they didn't want to come down with the rest of it, but frankly, the thought of pulling vines from a ladder did not appeal to me. If we paint the house this summer, we'll be renting scaffolding and will get it then.
I was afraid the top of the chimney might fall as it was!
I also put some root rot in the stump from the bushes that were growing there. Hopefully it was enough that they won't be growing back.

10 days to our next trip

Haven't been posting. Not much to say. But today I felt like saying 10 days to our next trip. Hubby is ready for the move, but things just haven't fallen into place yet. Two trips a year (each 2 weeks long) aren't enough for him.

As you know, he wanted to go over Christmas, but fortunately we didn't. One, money. Two, he got sick. The trip would have been no fun with him sick.

This trip we're looking at replacing the pump house. I'm not sure it needs replacing, but it definitely needs a little work.

At any rate, I was looking at my pictures and realized that I don't have a lot of the pump house. But I do have a couple, so I'll post them for you to see. He says the pump house has never been secured, It just set there so hopefully it won't be too hard for us to move by ourselves. 

Anyway, here is picture number one.

These pictures are from July 2008, our first trip after we got the property. That was one hot summer, well, after NC, anyway. 110 in the shade. From what I can see, I am hoping the cold and snow will stay away while we are down there this time!

I've been wanting to replace or at least cover over the power box to the pump house, so I guess maybe this will be a good time, since we'll have to cut power to replace the building. You can see the bare circuit box there on the pole beside the pump house.

I'm kind of hoping we can repair and use the roof that's there, but that remains to be seen, too.

He decided to save time, he would use fence panels to build the new pump house. Because it will be so much lighter than the old building, I think, I'm thinking we might want to fasten it down. But we'll see.

Here are a couple of pictures of what the new pump house is going to look like. Being fence panel, there are going to be a lot of gaps. We might want to fill those in, not sure. 

The panel with the door has been placed inside the shell for now. It's strapped down on the trailer, ready to go. The board on top has been screwed down. I'm going to try to get him to put another strap over that, though he thinks one won't be needed since it's screwed down. I guess we'll see as we get closer to leaving. 

If we can't get the old roof to fit this new building, then the board will be a temporary roof until we go back the end of May.
