Silent Sunday

It's snowing!

Now, I do realize this is nothing by Northern standards, but in a place where we are lucky if we see snow once in 3 or 4 years, to have snow again this winter, is just unusual!

It started snowing about 11 AM. This picture was taken a little after noon. It started as small wet flakes, switched to sleet for a bit and right now, just after 3 PM, it's just big flakes.
That said, it is the time of year where, if we're going to get snow, this is the time.
Also this snow is only supposed to be happening to Coastal North Carolina. Not West of here, where they usually get snow. Ocean Sound effect snow, basically.
Don't now if it has stayed East of highway 17 like they said or not.
But I do know Saturday classes have been let out at the colleges. Gusty wind today, too.
It's 26 right now. High today was 31 about 9 AM.
Tuesday it's supposed to be 50 and rain. Got to love NC. ;-)

I am so clueless.

Really, haha. While I hesitate to show my ignorance, I know everyone (me included) likes a little chuckle in the morning. So I thought I'd do a little post. :-)
As you know, we travel a lot. (Well, it seems like a lot to me.) And as I have a black thumb,  I don't have a nice garden like so many of you. But, I thought maybe I could garden in buckets. (The first thing I've learned is having a smaller area doesn't mean they will grow faster, heh.)
The box store had broccoli and brussels sprout plants last fall, so I figured it must be time to plant them. They would know, right?
Well, as you know, we have had snow and freezing temps. Not quite as bad as the South, but bad enough that the plants were not amused. I did cover them with plastic (trash bags) and a little bit of burlap (but not thick burlap because I wanted the sun to get through).
And despite my best efforts, I've manged not to kill them! The harvest, however, would probably be appreciated by guinea pigs or rabbits, if we had any such. I am hoping the wild rabbits won't get them though. Really.  Though I suppose they are too busy laughing to eat them. ;-)

This is my biggest head of broccoli.

The brussels sprouts have been completely unimpressed with the weather. And oddly, the peas I planted - mostly for the nitrogen for the plants - have not been impressed by the weather either.

I uncovered them yesterday because it was warmer, and I was hoping they'd get a bit more sun that way; but I think it's supposed to freeze again tonight, so I'll be 'bagging' them back up again this afternoon sometime.

Ah well. Got to start learning somewhere, right?

One political post

Please don't read if you don't want to read politics. Probably won't post such again. ;-)






It bothers me that people blame the president for the country's problems. The president only signs or vetoes what congress sends him.
And congress can override the presidential veto.

So the only people we really have to blame are the people in congress. The people who have been in place for the last 8, 10, 12 years and longer.
People really need to stop voting for these long term scumbags and put some new blood in office.
And while the scumbags are screwing up our lives, I'd like to see them take a pay cut and put a term limit on their offices. The congressional service was never intended to be a paid career.

That's all. Just wanted to say that. ;-)

January is almost half over!

I've enjoyed catching up with everyone and reading posts. Laundry has been beating me, but I'm catching up on that, too. (I don't like ironing though...)
My memory is really getting spotty some days. I told doctors years ago I thought I was getting Alzheimer's. They told me I was too young. I think they just don't want to bother. So I make a lot of lists, but sometimes the least little thing can make me forget mid sentence.

I am also putting off doing our taxes. It always makes me antsy to do them, for lack of a better word.

Fortunately we did not go to the farm the end of December. As it turned out the weather would not have been conducive to doing anything and with fuel prices only going up, it's too expensive to go too often.
Instead we're going back down the third week of February and hoping to replace the pump house. We wrapped the pipes before we left on our last trip and a good friend checked in December and said everything looked good. There's been some really cold weather since then (kind of unusual for the South), and hopefully everything is still okay. We put in a new water line for the house. Well, it will be when it's extended; it's just for the trailer right now. But we never got the trench refilled because of all the rain, so we just covered it over with plywood. Hopefully it is still okay, too.

When we go in February, we're only going for a week this time. The pump house will be the main project. If we have time, we're going to try to decide what to do with the kitchen floor. Hubby doesn't want it any thicker than it is, so if the plywood that is there won't come up easily, we'll probably just get a sealer for it. I really wish when people did something, they'd take the time to do it right.
How hard can it be to see THIS SIDE DOWN? And even if you can't read, can't you tell by the look that maybe a certain piece or two of wood should be flipped over?

Oh well. No sense complaining about what can't be changed, right?

We have snow! Unexpected. They said we'd only get rain but all the rain seems to be staying outside the Outer Banks. And of course I took the camera back out to the truck yesterday, because I've been forgetting it when we go anywhere and I wanted it when we saw the Bald Eagles. Go figure, haha.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

I said it before, but I'll say it again. I hope you all have a blessed, happy New Year. :-)

We went to the brother-in-law's today. Ham, collard greens, green beans, potato salad and black eyed peas.
While this 'heat wave' sticks around, we're hoping to go fishing tomorrow.
