So last Friday

So last Friday we decided to take a trip. We decided to go to Texas. They have what they call First Monday Trade Days in Canton, Texas. Hubby has been wanting to go since we first heard of the place. This weekend happened to be the time. We got there about 3PM Friday afternoon and the place is open until 6PM so we decided to go ahead and head on in.
Let me tell you, the place is huge! Their website doesn't do it justice. You will learn a little more on their faceless book page.
I don't know which gate we entered. They have several main entrances. Each of them has a cart rental for people with disabilities. Depending on which gate you enter, you should get there early or reserve one. When we ended up renting one, the place we rented ours had plenty. Someone said it's a hundred acres, or some such.

I did remember to take a couple pictures. Mostly I didn't because there were so many people.

These first two are just of buildings. We parked down the parking lot, you can tell by where I am standing when I took the pictures. I did that so if we got turned around, we could remember where we had parked! If you click them, I think they get bigger so you can see them better.

Inside the buildings are a lot of vendors. Tupperware, and Avon in addition to all sorts of home cottage industries (I think is what they are called now?) Towels, tables, food, toys, and I just can't remember all of it.
Hubby doesn't like those sorts of flea markets. I like to look at all of them. After about an hour of walking we found a cart rental. We found the outside vendor area and looked around there. There were people selling old tin from roofs, and several people who were sell actual rough cut lumber. How lumber used to be. The cypress and cedar smelled wonderful.

One vendor I asked if I could take pictures of his work, and he said please do. He also gave me one of his business cards. Pruitt Iron Works. According to his business card, he makes BBQs and Smokers. His website adds Misc.

I was quite impressed, I will tell you that.

The one round piece below R2D2, behind the business card, I'm not sure what it was. The trees and landscape are pretty though. Especially when you remember this is all just bits of.. metal!

We stopped off at Greenwood Flea Market on the way back, on Saturday, which I of course forgot to take pictures of. It is pretty much always the same vendors, but we go anyway. Lots of antiques and collectibles, but everyday type stuff, too. No website. Just their faceless book page. Not going to link. It's easy enough to find on a google search.

And we brought rain back with us. Light rain Saturday and Sunday. Rain yesterday and today, haha. Wednesday is supposed to be our only dry day. Chance of rain the rest of the week. With any luck, we go to V. Watts. this weekend. They are an antique shop that is open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. But the second weekend of the month, they host V.Watts Trade Day. That is when their parking lot and the lot between their antique store and their furniture store, turn into a flea market. Will try to get pictures, but there are always a lot of people, so we'll see.

Thunder getting nearer, so I will close before the rain knocks out the internet.

Things around the homestead

I can't remember if I posted about the acorns, but we have more acorns this year than any year since we retired here. It's like walking on crunchy snow.

I think the poor pecan season is over. We have had three days of rain. Four if we count the crazy thunderstorm we had around two this morning.

The cart holds about 6-8 inches of water. Another photo, just shows how far up the porch the wet came. The back porch was wet to the door, but I didn't take a picture of that.

Pecans picked in the rain get moldy if you don't have a way to dry them. We do often dry them, but I don't like picking them in a cold wet rain.
And pecans that you miss, that sit in several inches of rain, split. Split or mold, no one buys them. I think we got maybe 70 pounds? That thanks to son Robert. He has been a great blessing to us.

I am thinking we will keep all of them. Just in case. They store well in the shell.

From what I have read, all this rain, with leaves still on the pecan trees, should hopefully mean a better year next year. Apparently each pecan season is dependent on the weather the previous year. I'm lucky to remember what I did yesterday, let alone what the weather was last fall!

I hope some of this rain moves on to states that really need it.

Weekend

Drying out

Saturday and Sunday, we got another 4 inches of rain. It could have been more, but the little rain gauge said four, so that is what I go with.

We had almost two and a half inches last week.

So almost seven inches in two weeks! Needless to say, it is still quite wet in the pasture garden.

The cucumbers are only doing so so now. The beans are no more, as are all but one of the eight tomato plants I put out.

We bought three new tomato plants and put them by the house. The two regular size tomato plants I picked 8 tomatoes from yesterday. I did not take pictures. Between the rain and heat and humidity, even though none of them was completely ripe, they had all split to the meat. Makes me glad hubby doesn't eat as many tomatoes as he used to. They all went into the compost pile.

The Sun Sugar cherry tomatoes are slowly producing fruits. One has sort of survived in the pasture. The other is mostly doing okay in the tub I planted it in.

I'll take a picture sometime.
All the pole beans I replanted have grown taller than their supports. Now if they'd just flower!

We were blessed with more rain today.

And the garden is a little wetter...

Here, the first picture is the 'orchard' about noon; the second, a little after 1700 (5PM).

This is in the pasture, by the old Stewart pecan tree.

And the garden. I took a lot of pictures, but I think this one is sufficient.

One of our *hills* isn't as tall as it could be. There are tomato plants out there in the water in the middle of the two rows you can see. Fortunately there are six of that particular tomato, so if they don't survive we'll have others that hopefully will. Trying three new types this year. Rutgers, an heirloom; Sun Gold, a cherry tomato; and Sun Sugar, another cherry tomato. The two cherry tomatoes are related. From all I've read, some people like one, some the other, so hopefully they will survive and I'll get to find out which one I prefer.
There are also some blue lake pole beans in that picture, in addition to the marigolds and some purple thyme.
And yes, that is a good sized puddle out between the garden and the fence line. That spot has always been low. We are going to work on filling it in, but it will be days before I even think about going over there with a riding mower. Almost got stuck last time!

Most of the garden is not planted. Yet. Time will tell if it is.

We are supposed to have random days of sunshine and more rain. We'll see how it goes.
