Anyway, I wanted to talk more about plants.

We have this in the pasture growing around a fence post.

Hubby says it's a holly. Note that this picture was taken on our trip in December. December 27th. I don't think I've ever seen red berries on it.

However, there are a lot of... bush trees lining the front yard fence. Well, the part of it that passes the two main front oak trees.

They had plenty of berries.

They make me think of cedar waxwings, though I don't believe I've ever seen any on the farm.

This bush by the house also had red berries.

And another update. The bush by the house has been identified! Thanks to a photo posted by Janie, over at Southern Lagniappe, I have been able to identify the bush, and berries, as a Nandina. For reference, here is some web info; and here is a link to an earlier photo I took in May of 2010, showing the flowers that match the internet link. Never heard of it, but glad to have another mystery identified. :)

Did you know you can hard boil eggs by steaming them? Well, you can. Works great. I got the idea from Fresh Eggs Daily.

I don't have a steamer, so I used my metal colander. Set it in my small enamel pan, and put a large lid over it to hold in most of the steam.

However, my skill at hard boiled eggs ends there. I tried to follow the instructions, but the rolling and peeling still wasn't quite as easy as it should have been. I am certain the fault is mine as this is a skill I still need to master. I did have a few eggs that peeled nicely, but most of them looked like the Rat Pack and been nibbling on them. (Sorry, Mike.)

Oh well, today I'm going to try the egg salad portion of the instructions and see how that goes. Lisa makes her egg salad like I make my jerky. No measuring. Haha. Might be a disaster in the making, but we'll see how it goes.

I'm tired. Have a mild headache and backache, and have been going around in circles, lol.

Well, I've been trying to figure out what it is. John sent me a link to a very interesting berry page and at first, I thought I had it identified.

Sloe berries.

Except the only references I could find were all in England. And that it has thorns of a kind. I don't remember seeing any spines or thorns or whatever and I didn't notice any in the picture.

Another possibility was Damson wild plum,

However, of all the pictures I saw of Damson plums, they have that little line like other plums have, so I doubt these were that.

The last possibility I found was Greystone labrusca.

Which doesn't really look like it either.

I think we'll just have to have someone from the local Ag center come by the property next December if we haven't cleared it from the fence by then. Just our luck it will turn out to be something poisonous. Ha!

End of an era?

Kodak filed for bankruptcy today. I was sad when the last Kodachrome was developed, too. Too bad they couldn't have modernized quicker.

Wonder what it is Wednesday.

Noxious weed

When we got to the farm in December. It almost looked good.
I say almost because I don't think anything we have done so far has done anything to get rid of the Johnson grass. This is what greeted us.

I know it looks dead, and I'm hoping it is; but I'm pretty sure it's just dormant. When we cleared the space where we usually park the RV, there were hundreds of the little white root things that propagate the menace.
Oh well. Won't be long and with daily mowing we hopefully will kill it off.

Air Force memories

I commented on Mike's Air Force post that my husband started with Connie's and ended with AWACS. I didn't realize at the time that the Navy's plane was called Connie, too. For my hubby, it was these 2 planes that I meant.

The EC-121 Constellation. The triple tail, as I used to call the older one. And the E-3 Sentry AWACS.
He was in Avionics maintenance. A radio technician, simply put.
We met at Keesler AFB in Mississippi while going through technical school.
Fond memories.
The picture is one I purchased in 1997 for hubby's birthday and had framed by a local shop. It was one of a limited run for the Twentieth anniversary of AWACS.
